They charge clients UNFAIRLY usually by the hour.

Most charge by the hour, so even a phone call will be billed to you. They also charge you for work done by paralegals. Some will give you an initial half hour for free or reduced charge.

Litigation lawyers usually work for a percentage of the award, or a combination of hourly plus percentage.

If it does not involve any research then odds are the lawyer will give you the answer without charging anything.

But if it involves research then they do usually charge - by the hour. The hourly rate depends on where you are. small towns are less expensive than large cities.

By the minute for quick phone calls, by the hour for trials (but they do take all their 'research' time into account,,, even that done by paralegals.

When l was in paralegal school (a long time ago), if a lawyer was working on something & got a phone call, he was to hit the time card for the phone call, billing in 15 minute increments (even if the phone call was 2 minutes) & not cut off the time card for what he was working on.

Best to google the question u have, hit the lawyer in person (already knowing the answer), & just ask for verification.
