l Just started my own business, its a service business going to people houses. l have tried the newspaper but have not had any lucky and l do not wanna keep doing it because its very expensive. Is there any other way to get your name out there.l do not mind paying as long as l get results.

Maybe you could try leaflet drops or posters etc

Look into magazine advertisement that pertains to your market. That is what l do for my business and it seems to work well and has been very lucrative.

If you do your service to people you already know like friends, they can suggest you to other friends and you can network through word-of-mouth. Its the best way to do it, however if someone has a bad experience with you once it could have a MAJOR impact on others wanting your service.

One way is to get referrals from your existing customers offer them some discount or something if they refer a friend.

Try networking a little. Find out if there is a chamber of commerce or similar local business organization u can join. Put up business cards or fliers on any public noticeboards. A website need not be expensive nor complicated - even one page with ur basic information & contact details is better than nothing. A blog is ideal if you're not very technically minded.

Submit ur business to both online & print business directories that cover ur area. Tell everyone & their granny what u do & you're looking for work. Prepare an elevator speech for that very purpose (ie one that describes ur business in a few sentences, like you'd use if u were chatting to someone in an elevator that asked what u did for a living.)

Ask for feedback from trusted friends on the ads u already placed. Were they too long? Too short? Too complicated? Is essential information missing like contact info? Were u advertising in the wrong place? You get the idea. Analyze them best u can & u might find how to be more successful next campaign.

Join forums & communities that r related to ur business. Get to know more people online that work in the same area. It is just as important to build a reputation online as it is offline. Be helpful, share ur knowledge & build that trust.

Contact ur local paper & see if they'd be interested in doing a feature on ur new business venture. Offer them something in return such as a prize for a competition for the readers. If say you're running a house cleaning business, u could donate a day or week is worth to the lucky winner. Give them a reason to say yes.

That is about the best l can do without some more details on the type of business you're offering & ur target audience. That makes a huge difference in what ur options are. Good luck!

Some of the advice u have is good but too general. Although an 82 year old relative of mine is a computer whizz, she is a rarity. If u r looking to provide a service to older people, for example, u would need to target advertising to anyone who can influence them or in places where they would visit (community centres, doctor is surgery, library etc. & perhaps even social services). If ur service is unusual & interesting, a local paper or magazine might profile u & do a write up for free. If they try & sell u advertising tell them u have no budget. l got my products in three national magazines on the basis of uniqueness & a customer offer.You could link up with another organisation to offer ur service as a regular add-on to their business or as a special promotion (eg. u cleaned carpets & upholstery - talk to letting agencies & carpet shops, loss adjusters & insurance claims handlers)
There is no 'one size fits all' to this as ur business will have it is own USP is (unique selling points) & u must direct ur services or products in the right direction. Look at how similar business promote in other areas & above all do not be afraid to make ballsy approaches to anyone who may use or recommend u to lots of other customers. Start at the top & work down, join some local business organisations or clubs & keep talking to anyone who stands still in front of you. Have business cards at the ready to give to anyone u meet. Hi, the best way & most effective is leaflets but make them look good
Presentation is a must especially when u r just starting out
Always think big, the advertisement u do should look like u r a big professional company even if in reality u may be working from a shed.
So if u r willing to spend a little money, spend it on a professional looking leaflet.
You only get one chance to make a first impression so make it good.
Once u make them go to the post office & tell them the areas u want ur business to come from. It does not cost much to distribute. Take a map & highlight areas.

Well l have my own business - l deal with contracts - l advertise by word of mouth and create flyers with coloured paper. Also l use my friends as contacts. Maybe You can consider creating some business cards to leave at some homes of potential clients.

Assuming u just started out. you're a service business performing the service in people is homes. u need to spend ur advertising dollars locally.
The internet is nice but it is global. If u r in Tennessee u do not want to spend money advertising to people in California.
Try a group coupon mailer, like Val-Pak, or coupon magazine. Where numerous coupons r mailed out in one package. These usually have great success with local service businesses.
