l see a lack for a certain type of magazine ,Family main stream,that is, l would like to start it up, but l do not know where to start. What do you think?

l was a photo editor for magazines in NYC for many years. l think ur key requirement is a good distributor. And good paper, of course. The content could be whatever, but unless it looks great & is distributed properly, you're not going to make any money or get a readership base.

You could buy a list of names & mail a ''complimentary'' copy to people in the demographic that u want to hit. That might get u some subscriptions.

l guess it depends on how big u want ur magazine to be. Try to research the local magazines in ur area.

Start by designing ur product, at least a rough version. List article topics & columns for a sample issue, & if u can, create a look & layout for it. Do one issue, then list article ideas for about five more issues. Create a mockup of ur sample issue.

Also draft a business plan. Specify ur target market, the magazine is niche, why it is different from the many other family magazines out there, how you'd run the business, etc. Would u self-publish & try to distribute it to stores yourself? Or would u try to sell it to a publisher?

The Small Business Development Centers give free help with all aspects of starting a business. Granted, a magazine is generally big business, but until u have revenues exceeding $500,000, it is small & qualifies for their help. You would do these three things simultaneously: designing ur product, drafting ur business plan, & getting help from an SBDC.

Next would be financing & staffing. but by the time u get to these steps, u will know ur direction.
